The International Programs Center reported that HIV/AIDS epidemic in India varies from state to state, concentrated among prostitutes and drug users. In Manipur State, prevalence among drug users reached 80 percent in the early 1990s. The west and south of the country have experienced a worrying increase in prevalence among STD patients and pregnant women.

In addition, the rapid growth in motor vehicle activity in India is contributing to high levels of urban air pollution, among other adverse socioeconomic, environmental, health, and welfare impacts. For example, the m ajor contributions to Delhi’s air pollution are vehicles. Nearly three-fourths of India's population, which is rural, bears 84% of the burden of exposure to air pollution.

PCI-Media Impact ’s very first program was designed and broadcast in India— Hum Log (We People), a television program that aired in 1984-85. From the success of Hum Log, PCI-Media Impact has gone on to develop a number of other popular and memorable serial dramas that have filled the airwaves. Because PCI targets the people most in need of information on health, education, economic development, and hope to change their situation, we have primarily worked through radio serial dramas since our initial debut on Indian television.

The audience members are often the poorest, least educated members of India’s vast rural population. Throughout the years PCI-Media Impact has worked in India, many lessons have been learned, many successes have been celebrated, and many challenges met. PCI-Media Impact ’s work in India provides a glimpse of the long-term commitment that we have made to the issues and to the country.
